The Badrinath temple is the main attraction in the town. Badrinath is one of the Four Dhams of the country and is situated at an elevation of 3,133 meters above sea level, guarded on either side by the two mountain ranges knows as Nar & Narayan with the towering Neelkanth Peak providing a splendid back - drop. This revered spot was once carpeted with wild berries which gave it the name Badri Van meaning forest of berries. A legend explains both name and sitting posture as this place was full of Badri bushes and Vishnu meditating for, beloved Lakshmi stood next to him sheltering him from scorching sunlight turned into a Badri herself called Badri Vishal and her lord (in hindi Nath) thus became Badrinath. The mountains around Badrinath are mentioned in the Mahabharata, when the Pandavas one by one passed on ascending the slopes of Swargarohini (Ascent to Heaven).
Charan Paduka (2 kms.), Mana village (4 kms.) Vyas Gufa, Shesh Netra Tal and Ganesh Gufa, Bhimpul (4 kms.), Mata Moorty, Vasudhara Falls (8 kms.).
The shrine of Kedarnath, like Badrinath is held in equally high esteem and is visited by a large number of pilgrims every year. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend has it that the Pandavas of the Mahabharat epic underwent severe penance here to atone the killings of their kith and kin in the great battle of Kurukshetra, and established this shrine. The temple was built by Pandavas and revived by Adi Sankaracharya and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva. Amidst the dramatic mountainscapes of the majestic Kedarnath range stands the temple of Shri Kedarnath at an altitude of 3,581 meters above sea - level. Kedarnath temple town is a majestic sight, standing in the middle of a wide plateau surrounded by lofty snow covered peaks.
The shrine of Gangotri situated at an elevation of 3200 meters above sea-level amidst captivating surroundings is 100 kms. from Uttarkashi. Gangotri, the origin of the River Ganges and seat of the goddess Ganga, is one of the four sites in the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. The Gangotri Temple was built by the Gurkha general Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century, is situated on the right bank of Bhagirathi. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga (the Ganges) from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda.
Situated at an elevation of 3235 meters above sea - level, the shrine of Yamunotri is one of the Four Dhams of Uttarakhand. This sacred shrine of Yamunotri, source of the river Yamuna. The actual source, a frozen lake of ice and glacier (Champasar Glacier) located on the Kalind Mountain at a height of 4,421 m above sea level, about 1 km further up, is not frequented generally as it is not accessible; hence the shrine has been located on the foot of the hill. The approach is extremely difficult and pilgrims therefore offer puja at the temple itself. The chief attraction at Yamunotri is the temple devoted to the Goddess Yamuna and the holy thermal springs at Janki Chatti.
A journey that will take you on a quest for Moksha; a journey filled with fascination and spirituality. These Char Dhams - Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri of Uttarakhand are some of the most sacred and significant pilgrimages in India which take you on a path of divinity.
Every one of these Dhams holds a legend and is devoted to a specific deity. Yamunotri being the seat of the Goddess Yamuna is dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna who goes along the pilgrims to the high altitudes of the picturesque Rawai Valley. Gangotri is dedicated to the Goddess Ganga. The shrine overlooks the River Bhagirathi, another name of River Ganga. According to the legend, Goddess Ganga took the form of the river to cleanse the ashes and liberate the souls of King Bhagiratha’s predecessors. Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also a part of the Panch Kedar. It is the northernmost Jyotirlinga and is close to the source of the holy river Mandakini. Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is situated on the bank of the River Alaknanda. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated here while his consort Lakshmi took the form of a berry (Badri) tree to offer him shade.
